Save Our Souls
A chance meeting of two viticulture students in the Bass Phillip vineyard very early in their careers has resulted in a long friendship and a range of wines that has us at Naked Bunch gleefully excited. SOS is one of those rare & marvellous labels that provides soil- under-the-nails vineyard expression in elegant & engaging wines that are well within the budget of the casual drinker.
Owner / producers Jason Searle & Bill Downie moved in different career directions after they finished their viticultural studies but remained steadfast with their ideals & philosophy on wine. Bill garnered a significant degree of attention first through his role in the vineyard and as winemaker at De Bortoli and then with his own eponymous label. This success led to Bill’s role and as winemaker and general manager of the wonderful Thousand Candles & Witness Point wines. Jason has pursued another career outside the wine industry but has continued passionately with his work in Victorian vineyards.
In 2008 Jason started assembling a strategy for SOS. Over some casual conversations with Bill about his intentions with the label it was clear that this was a project the two would really enjoy working on together. The partnership was born. The two identified some key vineyards in Victoria with which they wanted to work. The idea was to produce some wines of palpable vineyard expression at the under $25 retail mark. That is no mean feat.
The fruit is sourced from sustainably farmed vineyards across Victoria, from the Chalmers family vineyard in Heathcote to the vineyards across the Yarra, Mornington & Gippsland. The wines are fermented naturally with minimal intervention in the cellar, including very low levels of sulphur only.
