Mike & Claudia Weersing’s Pyramid Valley label has quietly yet confidently found a cult following not only in NZ & Australia but around the world (available in extremely limited quantities only). And for good reason. It is essentially a collection of Grand Cru level vineyards in an otherwise unknown patch of pure & crisp NZ countryside.
From obsessive & precise site selection and densely planting carefully selected genetic material, to fiercely hands-on biodynamic farming both in the vineyards and surrounding farm, to fanatical handling of fruit at harvest; this producer is dedicated to producing some of the finest wine in the world The Pyramid Valley vineyards are Chardonnay & Pinot Noir planted on their own rootstock on a marriage of clay-limestone, the soil structure that has made Burgundy’s Cote d’Or the holy land for these two varieties. A mere 2.2Ha has been planted across four vineyards, each at a density of 10,000-12,000 vines/Ha (Grand Cru Burgundy density).
The four home vineyards each have distinct character due their unique soil types, aspect and slope. Each block has been named by Claudia according to the weed varieties prominent in each, which also reflect the difference in soils.
Each vineyard’s harvest is vinified separately, though all are handled the same way with fermentation and elevage happening in old barrels and clay amphora, which is a meticulous attempt to retain vineyard expression over winemaking practice.
A range of non-estate wines are produced under the Grower’s Collection heading, allowing Claudia & Mike to work with admired colleagues & friends, and special sites outside of their own. It also allows them to play with varieties other than those they farm at home.
